Throughout the book of Micah, we see a prophet driven to proclaim the character of God - The God of Justice. Micah is very clear about the reasons for God’s judgment — Israel has behaved unjustly and oppressed her own people by creating systems that further disadvantage marginalized people. So Micah acts as the voice of God to warn and rebuke Israel for the sin of injustice. Micah shows us that even though God was going to judge His people, He would also show them mercy. Through Israel, He would shower mercy on all mankind. Thus the prophet gives us a balanced picture of God’s character that we can still expect today: yes, God will execute true justice on earth through His Son, but He will also pour out His mercy on all who truly follow Him.
