“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” - Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah was writing nearly 800 years before the incarnation of Christ, when Assyrians captured Isreal’s people by the droves - the times were dark and despairing. When Isaiah wrote his prediction of a future Messiah, he was spurring Israel to put their future hope in God made flesh to establish His Eternal Kingdom on earth to rule with justice and peace.
For people looking for hope this advent season, these names describe what God is like and what we can expect from our relationship with him. Unlike the Israelites, we know the name of the long-awaited Messiah. We call him Jesus, the son of God.
